Worst Cities For A Vacation: 10 People Share Their Personal Experience

From subpar accommodations to lackluster attractions, there is so much that you can remember from vacation. What you experience makes your mind about whether or not you want to revisit the place.

A user asked on Reddit, travelers of Reddit, where do you NEVER want to go again? and here are the top picks.

1. Manila, Philippines

Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is a bustling city with a rich cultural heritage. However, not a lot of people had a great experience.

‘Manila. I loved the other places I went to in the Philippines, but Manila was awful. The air quality, the traffic, the garbage, and the weird proliferation of air-conditioned shopping malls. Most of all, child poverty was heart-wrenching. A good wake-up call for a privileged Westerner, but not one I want again.’ one user said.

‘Worst airport ever! And the city is a pile too’ said another.

‘Luckily the rest of the country is pretty awesome!’ added one more.

2. Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai is a shopping haven for brand lovers. But, is it a place for a relaxing vacation? May be not.

‘Why anyone ever decided to start a city where its 120 degrees and 90+% humidity every day is far beyond me,” said one. ‘Dubai’s average humidity is around 60%. If you think Dubai is humid, you should try Asia!’ another user added.

‘Agreed. VERY underwhelming experience in Dubai. It’s just another Las Vegas, but nobody is having fun’ another Reddit user said.

3. Freeport, The Bahamas

The Bahamas are popular vacation destination. The beauty, weather and everything else is supposedly perfect. But, what about Freeport?

‘Freeport Bahamas. The beaches were filthy, and I just felt like I was in a shipyard. They also have a problem with feral dogs. They were everywhere. It broke my heart to see the skin and bone dogs. I guess so many of them starve to death they cannot keep up with the body pickups. I saw too many decaying dogs to count. Seriously would NEVER go back.’ one user said

‘I actually posted the same thing. I will say, though, that they have a Lucayan National Park east of the city with a huge beautiful beach with very few people. But I spent 6 months on that island for work, and on the second weekend, I realized all there was to do to go to the tourist bars and read while nursing a drink.’ another user said.

4. Maskwacis, Central Alberta, Canada

‘Hobbema, is now Maskwacis. Definitely not a touristy area by any means. I was surprised and also not surprised to see it on this thread. Never been, but I’ve heard stories.’ another user said

‘Imagine us – 4 high school girls on a road trip to Edmonton, decide to stray off the highway to grab some smokes and snacks.

10 minutes later – I got lost in Hobbema, which was sketchy af, can’t find a gas station, and I hit a huge pothole while driving and stalled the car (still learning stick shift). As I get the car started, my friend in the backseat is screaming as two huge men walk towards the car (one holding a baseball bat),’ another user said

5. Kuta Beach, Bali

Kuta beach is one of the most popular destinations in Bali that gives you sunsets and a great surfing spot.

‘Had such high expectations, but there was just trash everywhere”, said one.

‘Completely agree! It was horrible and added in the street vendors that would physically grab and pull you into their store, and I did not have a good experience. Other parts of Bali are beautiful.’ another user said

‘Kuta is the worst. Utterly and completely ruined by tourists. I was there during Australia’s “spring break” (whatever they call it) season, and it was just full of Australian “Party bros.” I fled from there as fast as I could! Another user added.

6. Belize City

Belize is a cruise port which should not be missed in the Carribeans, according to most. However, Redditors had a different experience.

‘Belize City. Belize was one of our stops for the cruise we were on. I always heard about how gorgeous Belize was (and I’m sure there are beautiful parts of Belize). Still, Belize City was an absolute s..t hole’, shared one.

‘The city was full of armed military guards standing at street corners. The city canals and streets were incredibly polluted’ shared another.

‘I live in Baltimore and have seen some bad neighborhoods, but Belize City seemed way worse than anything I’ve seen. Many stores had armed guards who would unlock the door to let you in, and once you we inside, they would lock the door behind you’ shared yet another.

‘We didn’t experience any issues with the violence, but it was the strangest feeling getting stared down from every angle.” added another.

‘We stayed for about an hour and then decided it was time to get the fuck out’ shared one.

Seems like a lot of people don’t want to go to Belize.

7. Everything Somalia

‘I went there when I was in the Navy and spent some time on the shore looking at pits full of corpses and kids with machine guns.’ one user said

‘I’ve only been in parts of Kenya that border Somalia and was damned near scared for my life a few times, particularly as a woman. No plans to do that again any time soon’ another user said.

8. Gary, Indiana

A user shares ‘Came off the exit immediately into a neighborhood that looked like it was hit with some natural disaster before and never recovered, but no, they’re just too broke to fix their roads or anything. We tried to cut through the neighborhood as fast as possible, but the potholes made us not go over 25. We finally got to a gas station and the guy at the register said, “yeah, you all should get out soon; it’s about the time when they start robbing people.” Advice taken; got out of there.’

9. Lapa, Rio de Janeiro

Lapa is known for the nightlife, but apparently, you need to be careful about pickpocketing.

A user shares ‘Pickpocketers run that place. I saw one of my buddies get picked and confronted the pickpocketer hoping to get his stuff back, and they proceeded to kick us. Just skip it.’

‘Brazilian here. The city is incredibly dangerous; if you wanna avoid getting mugged, don’t wear what you do normally. A basic T, old tennis shoes and some jeans will do you fine. Don’t ever confront a criminal there for your own safety. Just hand it all over. Oh, and in stop-and-go traffic, windows should be going up.,’ another user added.

10. Camden, New Jersey

‘We went to visit a friend there. He says that he can’t wait to “escape” Camden – it’s so ugly and dirty.’ one user said

‘As someone who lived in NJ for 12 years, I can say that there are three sections of NJ, North, Central, and South, and each has its unique terrible city. North has Newark, Central is Trenton, and South is Camden. They’re all equally and individually terrible.’ another user added.
