As children grow older, parents should gradually give them more autonomy, as excessive interference with their life choices can have negative consequences. The Original Poster (OP) took it to the forum, and asked “Am I wrong for making my mom sleep on the couch after she hid my license and wallet from me so that I wouldn’t go for a job interview?”
BACKSTORY
OP lives in a 2-bedroom apartment with his mother and his little sister. He is 20 years old and has been the man of the house since the time his dad left.
OP’s grandmother is currently staying with them, which is why he is temporarily sharing his bed with his mother.
THE JOB
OP applied to work at Canada’s Wonderland, which is an amusement park. He got an interview call and was really looking forward to working there.
THE DISAPPROVAL
Even though OP was really excited about this job, his mother wasn’t very happy about him taking up the offer. She didn’t want him to go for the interview either.
THE PERSUASION
OP tried to make her understand that even though it was a 1 hour 30 minutes journey to his workplace, he still wanted to work there.
He also mentioned that his neighbor, who also works there, has never complained about it.
THE DISMISSAL
OP’s mother was not ready to listen to anything that he had to say, and completely dismissed him and his feelings.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP told his mother that he is going for the interview regardless of what she said.
HIDING THE LICENSE AND WALLET
OP’s mother then proceeded to hide his wallet and license so that he couldn’t go for the interview.
Although OP had some extra cash handy, his ID was in his wallet and he was desperately searching for it.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
OP requested his mother several times to tell him where his license and wallet were and she remained silent.
OP then put his mother’s pillow and blanket outside the room and locked the room from the inside. His mother then went to sleep on the couch.
NO SUPPORT
OP’s grandmother and little sister, both, feel that he is the one who is wrong and that it was terrible of him to make his mother sleep on the couch.
WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK?
“You need to move out and away from her.”, said one user.
“Yes, that is controlling. Very very controlling. And 100% not normal.”, said another user.
