HOW DO YOU TIE YOUR SHOES?

” ‘How do you tie your shoes?’. Opening question. It honestly helped calm me down and made the interview easier to get through. I brought up the TedTalk on properly tying your shoe and the lesson I learned from that.”

COULD YOU WORK WITHOUT YOUR INSULIN PUMP?

“During an interview, my insulin pump went off (it does this quite often). My potential boss asked me if I had to wear it all the time. I said yes and explained I was a type 1 diabetic. They then asked if I could leave my insulin pump in a locket for an 8-hour shift. No, I can’t. It got awkward. I didn’t get the job.”

DO YOU LIKE TO LAUGH?

” ‘Do you like to laugh?’ -asked the most stoic woman who worked in that office. I laughed in response and got the job. I answered correctly.”

HAVE YOU EVER RAPED SOMEONE?

“It was a panel interview (about 6-7 people. dept heads, hr, etc.) for a 911 dispatch job. This detective, out of the blue, asked me if I had ever raped someone. Caught me off guard and threw the whole interview off the rails.”

WHAT KIND OF FRUIT WOULD YOU WANT TO BE AND WHY?

“Last question in an interview for being a bank teller: ‘If you could be any kind of fruit, what kind would you be and why?’ I said a mangosteen. Years later, I asked him about that question; he said he just wanted to know what people would say. He said there were no wrong answers.” 

WHY DIDN’T YOU DO RESEARCH PROJECTS IN YOUR INTERN YEAR?

“For residency, I was asked why I didn’t do many research projects during my intern year. Because I was working 95 hours a week like the other interns? Come on, man.” 

WOULD YOU CONSIDER NOT WEARING MAKEUP?

“Would I consider not wearing makeup? As not to offend his Islamic beliefs.

It was an interview for a quality inspector position at a company that made glass Mason jars.”

DO YOU DRINK?

” ‘Do you drink?’. It turned out that this place was a ‘work hard, party harder’ environment, and they wanted people who would fit in.

(I do drink; I did get the job, but I soon realized that I didn’t drink enough to fit in. That place was off the chain.)”

CAN YOU TAKE A JOKE?

“Can you take a joke? Because we like to kid around here. You have to have thick skin to work here.”

WHAT’S YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL? 

“I was asked what my spirit animal is and why. This was at one of the largest hospitals in West LA.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS AFTER DEATH? 

” ‘I can’t ask you directly what religion you are. What do you think happens after we die?’

This was for a random minimum wage retail job to get me back into the workforce after being made redundant and having a year off work.”

WHY WOULD YOU RUIN YOUR BODY WITH TATTOOS?

“Not too bad, but being asked why I would ruin my body with tattoos when the position had no rules against them.”

WHY DON’T YOU START YOUR OWN COMPANY?

“Why didn’t I start my own company? They thought I was over-competent and assumed I would be bored quickly. I tried to change their mind, but they had already crossed their arms. The present headhunter also said afterwards that I must look into other things. I eventually got the sales position at a different company, which was my best job to this day.”

HOW DO YOU MAKE A SANDWICH?

“The interview started normal, then she stopped mid-sentence and asked me, ‘How do you make a sandwich?’ I thought I didn’t get the job and she was trolling. Turns out they ask questions like this to test your skills. The sandwich tested my ability to pay ‘attention to detail’.” 

WHAT DISNEY CHARACTER WOULD YOU BE?

“We were asked in a group interview if we could be any Disney character, what would we be and why? I jumped in, saying these questions are a bit Mickey Mouse. Didn’t get the job, nor want it after finding out more anyway.”

ARE YOU A PIRATE?

” I got asked if I’m a pirate. I said yes, I torrent movies. They loved the answer.”
